Remember when I wrote that Gedeon’s interview impressed me and caused me to like him even more? The same, unfortunately cannot be said of Ayla Brown’s parting interview.
I think the last thing in the world today’s young women need is more of the message that you can, and should be, superwoman. I think they would be better served by the message that you have to choose what you’re going to do well and what you’re going to do GREAT. I think it’s wonderful that Ayla has diverse interests and at 17 and 18, you should pursue those varied interests, but the reality is the choice is coming somewhere down the road. There are very few professional basketball playing pop stars. Perhaps Ayla doesn’t want to pursue professional basketball. Perhaps she does want to pursue professional singing. Either way, at some point in time one must become a priority.
So, perhaps America has done Ayla a favor. They’ve made it that much easier for her to decide what she’s going to focus on at this moment in her life. Best wishes to Ayla as she prepares to play basketball at Boston College.
